TRIPOLI, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were killed on Thursday in an armed conflict with militia members in a neighborhood in central Tripoli, said the anti-terrorist special deterrent force of the Libyan Ministry of Interior.
"Two residents of Ras Hassan neighborhood in central Tripoli were killed in an armed conflict with members of a battalion Bab Tajoura," its spokesman Ahmed Salem said in a statement.
"Our forces intervened to resolve the conflict between the battalion and young people (of) Ras Hassan neighborhood," Salem said, adding that the situation there was under control.
Local media published the image of a bleeding young man injured in the conflict. Social media circulated the video footage of young people from the neighborhood demonstrating and demanding the Bab Tajoura battalion members leave.
Security sources said the roads leading to the Ras Hassan neighborhood were closed for fear that the situation there would escalate.
